The anthology gathers contributions from very different fields of research und academic disciplines, including history and law, sociology and anthropology. Its starting point is the observation that religion is again being looked at as a potential force for social life and historical change. This does not take place without causing conflict. The new public visibility of religion is rather being highly controversial. Many of these conflicts are taken to court. It is therefore important to consider the role of law in the genesis, treatment and solution - or (violent) escalation - of religious conflicts. The first part of the book explores these questions from the perspective of history as well as sociology of religion and law. In the second part, selected conflicts are being reconstructed and analysed.>
